AISI projects help Alberta teachers and students

March 8, 2011

The Alberta Initiative for School Improvement (AISI) supports the improvement of student learning and performance by encouraging teachers, parents and the community to work collaboratively to introduce innovative and creative initiatives based on local needs and circumstances.

The goal of Edmonton Catholic Schools’ AISI inquiry-based learning project is to increase students’ understanding in social studies, science and math. The aim of this project is to help students work collaboratively, think critically, problem solve, reason and communicate their new learning to others. With inquiry-based learning, curiosity drives the learning process and heightens student engagement.

“These Grade 6 students are exploring geometric shapes and classifying the different angles found within them,” says Joe Estephan, AISI math inquiry-based learning consultant. “Math inquiry methods provide opportunities for students to investigate concepts in an open-ended fashion where multiple solutions are possible. With inquiry-based learning, math problems welcome success for both struggling and gifted students.”
